live poker

I played live for the first time in a while at the Holland Casino last night and booked a small win as I was quite card dead and also very rusty (and tight) at full ring since I never play that online any more. Pocket cowboys, tens, AKo and lots of trash, but I really only missed one good opportunity as I folded QJs UTG+1 after there had been quite a lot of reraising in the game. I would have flopped top pair with the J and had a 4 flush, and would have gotten there with the 3rd nuts on the turn if I had decided to have played. Two guys ended up all-in on the turn and I would have won the hand.....there's always next time. The casino was quite slow last night, maybe because Sinterklaas is tomorrow and Christmas is coming up, or maybe because of the economic downturn.

idiot neighbors

We have absolute idiots for upstairs neighbors here in Amsterdam and we're starting to think that they are both OCD. Heavy walking back and forth continuously for long periods of time and it sounds like they are constantly rearranging furniture, closets, whatever. Then all of a sudden it is so quiet, almost like someone died....weird. They have complained twice about our music being loud and both times it was pretty damned quiet, quieter than my normal standard which still isn't very loud. Two times tonight it sounded like one of them was banging on the wall but no one came down this time. Whenever we move, I'll put the names and address up here for everyone to see.

Epic fail...

And not just the shirt either.... America is getting infected with Simple Mind ConditionTM, where people no longer think at all but just believe whatever they are told. The old 'repeat it enough times and it must be true' saw at work, especially with the Obama/Muslim story that continues to be repeated, even though the very same crowd tried to tie him to Jeremiah Wright, a Christian. These people do no research into anything, they just mindlessly believe...blind faith in your leaders will get you killed, people. The rampant nationalism/racism/threats at the McCain/Palin rallies of late, stoked by comments of the candidates, have started to look like Germany of the mid to late 1930's. Scary stuff and scary people... Somebody should start asking Palin questions about the Alaska Independence Party since Obama had to deal with William Ayres. Overall, America is in pretty sad shape when the "Mother I'd Love to Fuck" factor starts playing into voting.

Lovin' it....

People are getting to see the Republican "base" for what they really are: a legal hate group. Foaming at the mouth hate spewers- they and radical Muslims are two sides of the same coin.

Just because I like the lyrics...

I am the one, Orgasmatron, the outstretched grasping hand
My image is of agony, my servants rape the land
Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain
Two thousand years of misery, of torture in my name
Hypocrisy made paramount, paranoia the law
My name is called religion, sadistic, sacred whore.

I twist the truth, I rule the world, my crown is called deceit
I am the emperor of lies, you grovel at my feet
I rob you and I slaughter you, your downfall is my gain
And still you play the sycophant and revel in your pain
And all my promises are lies, all my love is hate
I am the politician, and I decide your fate

I march before a martyred world, an army for the fight
I speak of great heroic days, of victory and might
I hold a banner drenched in blood, I urge you to be brave
I lead you to your destiny, I lead you to your grave
Your bones will build my palaces, your eyes will stud my crown
For I am Mars, the god of war, and I will cut you down.

This is just too funny....Palin is a post turtle. And what is a post turtle exactly, you ask? When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with. That's a post turtle.

credit/economy mess

The current credit/economy mess can be traced back to ex-Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, who on Dec. 15, 2000, hours before Congress was to leave for Christmas recess, had a 262-page amendment slipped into the appropriations bill. It forbade federal agencies to regulate the financial derivatives that greased the skids for passing along risky mortgage-backed securities to investors.
That is the same Phil Gramm that was the former economic advisor to John McCain. 'Nuff said....

miscellaneous rants

Poker has been going good, some downswings but overall it is good. Can't say the same for the economy in the US though- which bank/insurance company is going to roll over next? Merrill Lynch, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Lehman Brothers, AIG.... It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know where to point the finger at on all of this, now does it? The party of less oversight, less restrictions, less regulation, less taxes, big business and big banking is god- the Republicans. Now their chickens are coming home to roost and McCain (Keating 5 anyone?) is talking about reform and pointing the finger at the Democrats and Barack Obama. What a load of horseshit and anybody that thinks otherwise is a complete idiot. Today McCain said that he would fire U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox for failing in his oversight of Wall he could do anything after the Republicans removed the SEC's teeth.

All the morons that voted for and backed Bush shun him like the plague now and how his approval rating is still at 26% is beyond me but those 26% would still vote for him even if he was caught fucking little boys or dead little girls on the White House lawn. The Republicans always harp on reducing the size of government but George W. Moron has presided over the largest expansion of government since LBJ....whatever. McCain is talking about another round of tax cuts even now but economists say that to make that work, government would have to be cut back to the size of 1950's government and we still have that black hole of a toilet called Iraq that we are flushing money down at a record rate. Wouldn't that money have been nice to have now with the economy failing?

Stock market total returns (S&P500) during Presidential terms:
Roosevelt (12.1 years) 336%
Clinton (8 years) 259%
Eisenhower (8 years) 216%
Reagan (8 years) 200%
Truman (7.8 years) 185%
Bush Sr. (4 years) 73%
Johnson (5.2 years) 65%
Carter (4 years) 56%
Ford (2.4 years) 51%
Kennedy (2.8 years) 33%
Bush the Lesser (7.7 years) 3%
Nixon (5.6 years) --10%
Hoover (4 years) --68%

And these were before the recent meltdown. Fucking lovely.

My girlfriend and I found an apartment in the Rivierenbuurt, moved in and finally have everything mostly sorted out. I talked to a recruiter about a job but nothing has happened on that front yet but maybe sometime soon. Recently my job has been playing poker in the Holland Casino and that has been going very well, even with a setback last night. I probably don't have the bankroll yet for that game but I have been winning enough to pay my bills and build a bankroll, so I guess that I will continue with this 'profession' for a while.

We decided to chuck the plans to move to Vegas as it would just be delaying the inevitable, which is us moving to Amsterdam. The move to back to Amsterdam was the plan all along as my girlfriend and I both love it there and she wants to go back to do some school and it is a lot easier for her to study in Dutch than English. Not a ton of casinos there but there is one, and I can always continue to play online and pursue Dutch citizenship. I will be able to get a residency permit for now, so I won't be stuck with just a tourist visa like last time. I'm looking forward to it highly, especially with the economic downturn in the US.

E-Trade = Bodog?

What is it with these companies lately? I have been trying to transfer some money from E-Trade to my bank account and these morons have been giving me the fucking run around. Yesterday I went on there to set up my regular banking account for external transfers out of the E-Trade account and it was supposed to send me an authorization code through e-mail.....24 hours later, no code. So I called there and was transferred on the phone twice and ended up talking to some doofus and the phone connection sounded like they were holding two phones together. He told me to go back on the website and set up the account again, and this time I would receive the e-mail. No fucking e-mail yet so I'm probably closing the account tomorrow and moving the money somewhere else. As I told them, it is MY money after all.

Teabagging of the Year

I doubt there will be a better one this year as Danny Green gets the honor for this teabagging of Greg Paulus.

The Bodog saga is finally at an end as I got my money back, then promptly deposited it on Full Tilt as my account there is a quite a bit smaller than my Stars account. I will never darken Bodog's threshold again as I think I would rather even deposit my money on Absolute/Ultimate Bet and take my chances there. It took a little over a month to get my money back and there is no way I'll ever take a chance with Bodog again.

Eye Care Associates, Raleigh NC at Brier Creek

I would avoid Eye Care Associates of Raleigh, NC (Brier Creek location) like the fucking plague and any of the other ones as well if they are as bad as this one. I went for an eye examination in November 2007 as I hadn't been for a while and wanted to see if my contact prescription needed to be changed, and also wanted my girlfriend to get her eyes checked. They said that my prescription had changed so they gave me a pair to wear and ordered a box of contacts for each eye, and charged me $542 for both of us. They never called me when the contacts came in so I had to call there about the contacts, then after wearing the trial pair for a while, the reading (left) contact just never worked right and I was straining my eyes, so I started back wearing my glasses. As I was busy over the holidays and with other things, I didn't reschedule an appointment until the first week of February, and I had to pay for a second contact examination to get a prescription that was right after they screwed up the first one....partly my fault as I waited so long. After getting a second eye exam, the doctor said that I could trade in the boxes of the wrong contracts for the new ones and they gave me a trial pair to wear that was close to my prescription as they didn't have my exact one in trial contacts and they said they would call me when the correct prescription trial pair came in. Did they? Of course not, and I had to call once again. I tried these for a couple of days and liked them, so I called back and said that these were good and that they could order a box each for me. They said that they would call me when they came in (where have I heard this before?)...did they? Of course fucking not, so I had to call again two weeks later, only to find out that the contacts had not been ordered. I went in today to pick up my contacts, only to find out that they still had not been ordered! What the fuck is going on at this place? It's like the Monty Python cheese shop skit where the shopper finds out that they don't actually have any cheese at all and shoots the store clerk...I only wish that I could have done that! I preceeded to cancel the order, get credit for the two boxes of wrong contacts and get my prescription so that I could order some contacts from 1-800-contacts. Maybe I will FINALLY get some contacts....I would HIGHLY recommend avoiding these fucking idiots.

certification test

I have been studying a bit for the last two months so that I can add some certifications (ICC) onto my resume to help with the job search in Las Vegas. It is really dry text and not very much fun to deal with, but I have just sucked it up and got down to business with it. My job is so boring and since I work mostly alone, I have had time at work to study as well and if anyone has seen me doing it, I have told them it is just job related research. The books I have been studying are related to what I'm currently doing, so it isn't a stretch by any means. I signed up to take the test this past Tuesday and with the cost of that plus the cost of the books that I had to buy, I now have over $850 involved in this, so failure is not an option. I went in and took the test and the Q&A section is somewhat tough but doable...then I hit the plan reading section. The plans are absolutely HORRIBLE and I sincerely hope that no building was built from these or else it is a death trap. The test is computer based but with actual paper plans, so I can see the time is ticking on the screen. When I first came in, I figured that I would be done an hour earlier than the 3.5 allotted hours but ended up taking 3 hours and 17 minutes. But I PASSED even though I have several friends that took the test and all failed. I put it on my resume and already have had 3 calls about jobs in Las Vegas. So now that the ICC Reinforced Concrete test is out of the way, it is on to the Structural Steel and Bolting, Fireproofing, and the AWS CWI.

This has been going on long enough now and I have had enough. I want my money that I transferred and I want it now, no more fucking games. Uh, yeah..whatever. Just send me my fucking cash....and learn how to spell queue and apologize.

Bodog Fucking Sucks!!!

I recently opened an account at Bodog...not really sure why I did that since it is third rate as compared to PokerStars and Full Tilt, but I guess it was to play in the blogger events there. Anyway, when I funded my Full Tilt account, I used Netspend and received one of their reloadable Visa cards after having a ton of problems with Epassporte (they took over a month to answer the e-mails I sent to tech support). So I went the Netspend route with Bodog even though it takes a while, usually ten days as I first have to send the money to Paypal and then to Netspend. While I was waiting the ten days for the money to transfer, I think I received an e-mail a day from Bodog about loading my account. So as soon as the money hits Netspend, I transfer it into my Bodog account. So what do they do? They fucking disable my account because "it has come to our attention that there are other Bodog accounts using information similar to yours". As in they funded their accounts using cards with numbers? That's pretty damned vague if you ask me....after doing some research on the 'net, it seems like this is pretty standard fare for Bodog. Seems like they also drag their feet forever if you request a withdrawal as well, so as soon as they get my account enabled, I'm withdrawing and will never be back. I already thought that it pretty much sucked that you had to pay an additional $50 for a program so that you can use Poker Tracker at Bodog, so I'm going to save the money/aggravation and just pass on Bodog. I recommend anyone else to do the same.

I took my girlfriend to the airport yesterday so she is back in Amsterdam...the one and only negative to having a Dutch girlfriend is that she has to leave the country every three months, which majorly sucks. This time it will be 50 days, which if I recall correctly, is the second longest time that we have been apart but she has to work some so that she can come back and have a poker bankroll for when we move to Vegas. ;-)
My job just isn't going to end soon enough either and her being gone just will make it seem like that much longer. One of the great mysteries of my life is how the company owner came to be so rich being so damned stupid. The more I puzzle about it, the less clear the answer is so I just quit thinking about it. But as far as mysteries of life go, it is right up there with how 16 year old female breasts manage to defy gravity no matter how big they are and how Paris Hilton/Britney Spears/Lindsey Lohan/insert name here all have managed to avoid Darwin's theory of natural selection.

Thursday, February 21, 2008

I'm just so anxious to get on with moving and leave my crappy's like being on a last place team that isn't going to make the playoffs and you are just playing out the string and going through the motions. I have been working on a presentation type thing for the company where I work and, in my opinion, I have it finished but the owner keeps sending it back to have more added to it. I think he wants me to fluff it up with a bunch of other words, blow smoke up somebody's ass to try to get approved to do some work. That isn't my style and I know some of the people who are going to read this and I really don't want them to think that I was responsible for this. Such a great company to work for- I have been here SEVEN months and still don't have a key to get in the front door! Fucking unbelievable....

Amsterdam....on vacation

I'll be heading back to Amsterdam in April for 10 days and I'm very much looking forward to it, although I'm dreading the move after getting back. Ten days will give me enough time to see all of my friends and play in the NLHE tournament twice, which both will be a lot of fun. I guess I'm most looking forward to leaving my job though as it has become a major drag and I hate coming to work every day. Although my plan isn't to jump into playing poker full time as of yet, the thoughts of being my own boss are very appealing to me after working in a bad environment for a while. The Amsterdam vacation will be very good for me as far as putting the whole 9 months out of my mind though.

work, pt. 2

Yesterday the owner of the company that I work for approached me and I still haven't figured out what the point of the conversation was. He was telling me that I should think twice about moving to Vegas (indirectly saying that I was going to go bust and end up stuck with no money)and that you couldn't live in Vegas for less than $500 a day! Not sure what his living standards are but I think I can make it on slightly less than $500 a day....maybe he thought I was moving in the Bellagio or something. No intentions here on jumping out and trying to play poker full time right off the bat and since I work in the construction engineering and management field, I don't anticipate having much difficulty finding a job. We are going to head out without a place lined up to move in and more than likely without a job lined up, but I'm not worried about either as I have way more than enough to live on for a while without dipping into my bankroll. Oh, the last bit of advice given to me by the owner about poker in Vegas was that "it's not all about pot odds in Vegas". No, really? Really?

Thursday, January 24, 2008

I wish I could move to Vegas tomorrow as I'm about absolutely sick of my job and the idiots that I have to work with everyday. The guy that owns the company is a complete moron and the company is the most dysfunctional mess that you would ever want to see. The supervisors all carry digital cameras around in their trucks so that they can take pictures of any kind of perceived screw up and run back to the boss with them to score brownie points for themselves. Basically a five year old 'mommy, mommy' mentality.... The owner was a only child and has this 'my way or the highway' mentality that brings out the worst in people, so much so that the only way that the company can keep anyone is to overpay them to put up with the shit. It's not all about the money for me so I'm glad that I'm going to be bailing soon.

Amsterdam is going to have to wait pt. 2

Because we're moving to Vegas! After the vacation there, my girlfriend likes it a lot (much to my surprise). We have been extremely bored in Raleigh and change is always good for me as I tend to easily get into ruts. We both are looking forward to being able to play poker whenever we want and not having to worry about funding an online poker site. I have a nice roll on PokerStars but not so much on FTP until yesterday when I was finally able to put some money on there through my bank. I'm pretty superstitious about rolling money out of my Stars account so I just pulled it out of savings. Anyway, we are both excited about the move and will probably roll out in April since she has to go back to Amsterdam in March. Woohoo!!!

Vegas was +EV for me

My girlfriend and I had a great time in Vegas over the holidays and the poker tables were extremely kind (and soft). I was able to pay for the vacation and all of my bills for the month and still have a bit left over by playing the $1/$2 NLHE and tournament tables. I played three tournaments and made the final table of each, and made it to heads up on one and chopped that one due to another tournament getting ready to start and the poker room needing the table. I'm usually opposed to chops and would rather play it out but didn't want to be a jerk about it. The $1/$2 tables that I played at (Flamingo) were definitely softer than I thought that they would be and softer than most of the $1/$2 tables on PokerStars. I mostly tried to play small ball and pick up a lot of small pots but made most of my money on a couple of big pots that I took down. In the first one, a player (fairly new on the table, I didn't have much of a read on him yet) in early position made a $10 raise and it folded around to me. I look down and find pocket 9's so I call the raise, feeling that the original raiser probably has a pocket pair as well or at least two broadway cards. The flop was about as good for me as it could have been, as I flopped top set with a 9 5 2 flop, all black cards. The original raiser pushed with about $160 and I put him on aces or kings but it didn't matter as I was definitely calling with top set. For whatever reason, the dealer didn't call for us to open up, but I filled up on turn as another 5 hit the board. When the dealer had finished, I turned over my cards and announced 9's full of fives and the other player turned over his aces for two pair. The biggest hand for me was one where I was in the small blind and completed with a 7h8d after a bunch of limpers. The big blind was not an aggressive player and I was pretty sure that he was going to check his option and see the flop with so many limpers. The flop came 8h 9d 10d, giving me a pair of 8's with an open ended straight draw and a back door flush draw. I made a pot size bet and was called by one player in the UTG+1 position. The turn brought card that was good and also scary for me in the Jd. It completed my straight and gave me an open ended straight flush draw but also completed any flushes. I decided to take a shot to see if my straight was good and made a pot sized bet of $40, only to be raised to $140 by the UTG+1 player. He was a young college kid from Chicago and hadn't shown much aggressiveness to this point but had won a few small pots. I was a bit surprised by the raise but went through what I thought that his range might be and tried to make a read on him. He looked a bit nervous and after thinking it through a bit, I made the call. I thought about reraising and pushing but since I didn't think that he had the flush, I also thought that he would fold to the big reraise and there was no more money to be had here. A 5s hit the board on the river and I checked and he checked as well. I turned over my straight and he showed 8s 10s for two pair. The player to my right told me that he had folded the Qd, giving me only the 7d left for my straight flush. Not too long before that hand, I was sitting at the table when the Harrah's Megabeat Jackpot hit and I received $169 for that for doing nothing! I never did hear what the hand was that was cracked or where it happened. I lost one big hand in my first session there and was stacked in the process but after that, everything was great. In that hand, I tried to get cute with pocket aces and paid the price for it. I was UTG+1 and limped in, hoping to get a raise and put in a reraise as the game had been somewhat loose to that point. There were no raisers however, only a bunch of limpers. I flopped top set and probably didn't make a big enough bet into a somewhat small pot and a board that had two hearts. I had one caller, a tough local player that I had not played many pots against. The turn brought another heart, completing any flushes that were out and giving me the nut flush draw as I had the ace of hearts. I checked and he pushed and put me to a decision. I thought about it for a bit and although I hadn't seen him caught bluffing yet, I had thought that he was some and thought that he was this time as I didn't think that he had the flush. I called and he turned over Jh 7h for the flush so I was behind but had some outs to the nut flush or a full house. I didn't hit any of them on the river and ended up losing +/- $160 total on that one hand. The tournament that I won was pretty nondescript and I don't remember too many hands from it other than at one point I was short and pushed with 2c 3c and hit a 3 to double up, and the last hand of the tournament where my opponent made a big raise and after thinking about it, I pushed and had him dominated with my A7 against his A6. I took a slight chip lead on that hand and we chopped before playing another.
Overall, we had a really nice trip and are looking forward to going back. I wish that I had done a little less sight seeing and played some more poker but it's all good. We stayed at the Flamingo and really enjoyed it and the location is great, right across from Caesar's and Bellagio.
